Today India’s independence date is Shravan Krishna Chaturdashi. India got independence on this date itself.
It is the irony of this country that even today the national festival is celebrated in India according to the English date. The British rule which our forefathers removed for the establishment of Indianness is still being run by our rulers.
Paramaradhya Paramdharmadhish Uttaramnaya Jyotishpeethadhishwar Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swamishri: Avimukteshwarananda: Saraswati ‘1008’ said these things after hoisting the flag on the occasion of Indian Independence Day celebration in the Mela premises.
He said that it is not that the leaders of this country do not understand that festivals of India are celebrated on Indian dates. Because on the day of Ramnavami, Janmashtami and Mahashivratri, holidays are given in schools and government offices in this country according to the date, but for organizing our national festivals, the basis of the Gregorian calendar made by the British is taken.

Further said that when India has its own rich tradition of reckoning, then we should be proud of it. There is no reason why we should follow the method of others. The people of India take pride in being an Indian.
