A workshop on the role of media in disaster management was organized on Saturday in the Disaster Mitigation and Management Center auditorium located in the Secretariat Complex, Dehradun, ukpkg.com.
On this occasion, Additional Secretary, Disaster Management, Anand Srivastava said that the role of media becomes very important during disasters. Coordination of media and disaster management system is essential.
Executive Director Dr. Piyush Rautela said that the geological and geographical conditions as well as the weather-related asymmetry make Uttarakhand very vulnerable to many disasters and due to these, there is a huge loss of public and money every year. This damage caused by disasters can be reduced through public awareness. Media can play the role of a helper in maintaining the morale of the affected public community by dissemination of relief, rescue and rehabilitation related work being done after the disaster.
In the workshop, special emphasis was laid on speedy transmission of information and media management and the need to pay attention to ensure that the media can discharge its duty sensitively while protecting the privacy of public interest during coverage. In times of disaster, the role of media becomes very important. Such information should be known to the public through the media, so that adverse situations do not arise. Since incidents like divine calamity happen suddenly, so there should be minimum loss of life and property in these incidents, for this it is necessary for the public interest to reach the general public with the right information about the facts along with public awareness.
In this media workshop, the speakers also pointed out the need to pay attention that arrangements should be made for regular training of people related to disaster management, as well as arrangements should be made to make available information about the activities related to disaster management to the media from time to time.
